That title is a bit dramatic, but I can't help it - this was the first story in the Jack Daniels series I actually liked (I gave Shot of Tequila a whopping five stars, but that's not a part of the official chronology of the original series because it's a prequel). Never mind the Bill O'Reilly version, this book, by its very nature and subject, gets to the absolute core of this remarkable and controversial historic figure. Among the new elements: our heroes Petal and Gabe start off by discovering strange family backgrounds, leading to some of the most poignant passages in the whole series to date; a decidedly-ancient gaming system is tracked down for mysterious purposes; Jachz, one of the story’s most interesting creations, discovers new layers of himself while communicating amusingly with beings both organic and artificial; and Gerry, the original catalyst for these entire adventures, is revisited in ways I won’t reveal, but which again result in touching moments and exciting twists that drive an already-rich plot. I felt that this was an awesome read for anyone training for their first (or 100th) marathon. As I was going over those action items, I could apply them to my own parenting but could see each one as being broad enough to apply to younger or older kidsmaking this book an evergreen choice for parents.
